Does having a filling hurt?

For a shallow cavity, anaesthetic is often unnecessary and the sensation is mild. For a large cavity or one close to the pulp, the dentist gives a local anaesthetic to limit discomfort during the procedure.

How long does a filling last?

That depends on the position of the tooth, the size of the filling and each person's chewing and cleaning habits. The dentist will check your fillings at your routine visits.

What happens if decay is left untreated?

The cavity gradually spreads towards the pulp, leading to pulpitis and more pain. Treatment at that stage is more complex and more expensive than filling the tooth early.
