Seeing saliva mixed with blood after an extraction alarms many people. Light oozing is normal, but you should know how to control it and which signs are not.
- Light pink oozing or blood-tinged saliva in the first 24 hours after extraction is normal.
- Bite firmly on gauze over the socket for about 30 to 45 minutes and use fresh gauze if it keeps bleeding.
- Do not rinse hard, use a straw or touch the socket, so the blood clot is not dislodged.
- Bright red blood flowing, bleeding that lasts, or pain that grows after a few days needs a return visit.
After an extraction, the socket needs time to form a blood clot, the protective layer that lets the wound heal. So light pink oozing or blood-tinged saliva in the first 24 hours is common.

How to control bleeding correctly right after extraction
- Bite firmly on the gauze right over the socket for about 30 to 45 minutes, without taking it out repeatedly to check.
- If it is still bleeding afterwards, replace it with a clean folded gauze and bite for another 30 minutes or so.
- Keep your head raised when resting rather than lying completely flat.
- You may apply a cold pack to the outside of the cheek on the first day to reduce swelling.
What to avoid so the clot is not dislodged
- Do not rinse hard or spit repeatedly.
- Do not use a straw and do not smoke.
- Do not touch the socket with your tongue or fingers.
- Avoid hot food and drink and strenuous activity on the first day.

When is bleeding abnormal?
Contact the clinic again if:
- Bright red blood is still flowing after you have bitten on gauze correctly twice.
- Bleeding continues into the second day without easing.
- You feel dizzy or very tired, or pain grows after two to three days.
People with heart disease, diabetes or who take blood-thinning medicine must tell the dentist before the extraction and be watched more closely. See extraction in people with heart disease or diabetes.
